Channel Masking: An Answer to Impossible

Posted by: photoshopmasking on: October 20, 2009

Is it always possible to silhouette an image with intact edge?
What to do with a hairy or furry image in background removing task?
Yes, designer faces real challenge when to knock out the back ground of a complex object with furry, smoky or zigzag edge. Amateur’s Lasso or Magic Wand fails to do it. Even expert’s Pen tool or Background Remover is not able to make fine path around such delicate edge. But photo- wizard Adobe Photoshop gives a wonderful way-out to select, save or silhouette such image; and the way is Channel Masking.
Channel Masking is a Raster Masking involves Photoshop masking techniques with CMYK, RGB, and various other custom channels. This masking is exceptionally quick and powerful means to select an intricate object in an image which is almost impossible by any other tools. This method considers contrast of colors with the surrounding pixels.
Channel masking bring the best result in semi-transparent, feathered and blurry images like hairs, fur, feathers, smoke, flames, firework, lighting etc. With Channel Masking, you can mask the selected object and make a silhouette or sunset effect within a few minutes. Or you can remove the background and place the selected object on a new background convincingly. Sometimes Channel Masking alone may not be sufficient to make a finest output. But, in combination with other tools such as Dodge, Blur, Clone Stamp, Background/Magic Eraser tools, it can bring maximum exactness in a background removing job.
The other advantage of Channel Masking is selection saving. Channel masking is also handy for color separation, color correction etc.
So, I suggest new designer to be used to with this easy masking technique to make thing possible in an image. Tutorial are available in internet. It will take just an hour to muster this art.
